He Wasn't There
He was the one, she said.
Words I overheard in the halls.
That was two months ago.
Back then, that could have been true.
Now this is our reality.
He wasn’t there.
He wasn’t there when I saw her lying on the floor, her eyes full of tears.
He was there when he slapped her.
He was there when he threatened to kill her.
He didn’t help her, I did.
I got him expelled.
He didn’t listen.
Not when she was scared.
Not when she found the note.
Those three words,
It’s not over.
He didn’t care.
Not when she saw him.
Not when she ran.
She still has the scar.
She was crying in the library that day.
He left her.
Her heart was broken.
I was the only one there to help pick up the pieces, her only true friend.
I was there.
