Seasons of Love
You held my hand throughout the first winter
It’s strange,
but I can’t recall a time
when our fingers weren’t
intertwined
Whenever we ventured outside,
your hand shot out to take mine
You never asked aloud,
your lips never moved,
but I recognized the relief in
your eyes
when my hand molded against
yours
And I held to you also,
just as tightly,
because I thought if my hand went slack,
you would blow away
The rainy season came after,
to wash away the insecurities
and doubts
I know how you hate the wet,
you always left your umbrella
behind,
but I loved how you managed to
kiss me
just before the downpour
We watched the flowers come to
life
while we let the rain sink into
our hair
A feeling bloomed in my chest
towards the end of Spring
Something like hope
Summer nearly knocked us off
our feet with the heat,
but somehow we remained
standing
Fire fueled us
and we never slowed down
We left everyone behind,
relying only on each other
I stared at you with such
fondness
You were my sun,
filling me with warmth
as your rays kissed my skin
The fall arrived abruptly
Leaves began to turn
creating soft colors
I wish I could say that
the leaves were the only things that
changed
But that was not the case
We looked at each other carefully,
trying to find what we once knew
The wind pushed us away slightly,
just enough to know
that something was different
Winter was what took our love
and made it icy
We looked at each other,
aghast that what we had once perceived
to be as beautiful as crystals
was simply frozen water
The snow showed our footsteps
as we walked away,
evidence that we were drifting
Outside,
it was cold
But the look in your eyes
when you happened to glance at me,
it was colder
And so Spring has arrived once again
The flowers bloom the same
The trees gain some of their leaves
Water rolls down the sky
to land on my eyelashes
I have come to find that it is easy
to return to the spot
where we watched life
be born from the ground
And when it rains
I can’t help but tip my head,
searching for clarity in the falling shower
and wonder
if you still forget your umbrella
