Please, Not Again

July 18, 2013

I remind my mother
On the thirtieth of every month
That it's time to pay the bills
So we don't have dinner in the dark
Again
Please, not again
Is this the way it's supposed to be?
I remind my sister
Not to invite her friends over
During the summer
Because we can't afford AC
And we don't want them to complain and end up going home
Again
Please, not again
I remind my father
That we don't need to buy desert
Because we have grapes at home
And we don't want to be in debt
Again
Please, not again
I remind myself
To distance myself from the people I love
Because they can't know this is the way I live
Again
Please, not again
Please, not again.

I thought that saying "please, not again" makes this poem all the more powerful because by saying agian, it sounds like everything has happened before, which makes the poem even sadder. Great job! I love this poem.

It is better to write for yourself and have no audience than write for your audience and have no self.
