Democracy
Is tried and true
It works for me,
It works for you.

Democracy is a funny thing
It is made to give everyone the wings
They need to do the right thing
With the help of a government
That’s built and only meant
For the people, by the people
Like ours is
More like once was
And because of democracy
We can say what we want
Think what we want
As long as no one is hurt
We can do what we want
And lose what we want
And pick up our friends from out of the dirt.

Democracy is beautiful,
So many agree
It is the screams of silence
That are shown for all to see
It is a government meant to put right
All wrongs
To never hold back songs
So we all can belong
In this world full of longing
This Earth full of hope
It is equal rights for
Women,
Queers,
It’s the way that we cope
With oppression we’ve faced
With illusions we’ve made
With the wrongs of a people
Who denied those rights
To so many
Who cried out for aid



I know that someday democracy
Will reach all
To people of all colors
To large and to small
To people who love
Men, women, both, or neither
To people who live
In the ghetto and in fear
To single mothers who raised three children,
So dear
To her heart
So close to the future
They make art, change, or money
They all have the same rights
So democracy,
We’re coming
We won’t be too long
Democracy,
Just wait,
We’re coming along
And when I say we,
I mean all of us here
All the people outside
Still living in fear
Democracy is what all people deserve
So take a stand with me
If you have the nerve
Run for democracy,
It’s worth it, I swear
Run for your rights,
For humanity,
If you dare.
