Betrayed
Twelve pillars govern Capital Row.
A strip of granite blocks,
Each step raps his knees woodenly.
Twelve pillars munificent – yet the picture of equity –
Six white, six black; two eyes plead to the right.
He shuffles along icy gray tiles.
Twelve pillars are flawless. Until
Brash hands chisel the chamber walls
Admitting an unseen haze.
Twelve pillars blind in shimmering yellow,
A shackle hooks two white feet and
The thwack! of an ebony axe rings aloud, again, unheard.
