Hazel Eyes
Hazel eyes are projectors of sound
of light
of distance from time
and the hazel color
creates a surreal void
looping and looping
and lingering in empty space.
When there are hazel eyes,
their brown and green colors
are obscured
mixing together like melted crayons
to make a trick of the light
to have a shimmer
a shine
a twinge of this
a sprinkle of that.
A vivacious mixture of personalities
a lovely stripe of green in the brown
or brown in the green.
Mossy eyes on little patches of soil
in the hazel-eyed gal’s irises,
gulping up every string of light.
They aren’t some
canned-pea soup color
not a pukey green
or even the sea-sick green.
They play songs of the mandolin
as an elevator to relaxation,
or being lost in a forest
but not the sea.
Sometimes even finding
a little worm of blue
trying to peek through
hazel eyes.
