"Friendship isn't always easy, but there's no doubt it's worth fighting for."

I tear out a tear-stained page,
With its smudged ink that once said words,
Empty promises devoid of real meaning,
That I wish I'd never heard.
You said that you'd love me forever,
You promised you'd always be there.
I clung to your plastic words tight,
Hopelessly oblivious, unaware.
I wrote about our non-existent future,
You wrote blatant lies of love.
The difference was that I had hope,
Whereas you knew, lasting, there was no chance of.
Red and orange flames lick the page,
Tentatively, not wanting to harm,
A page filled with such beauty and heart,
But they're just there to disarm.
Suddenly, the flames attack the page,
And in seconds, it's turned to ash.
By vicious, uncaring, destructive flames.
And those words, like us, are gone too fast.
Why aren't you here to dry my tears?
Why is this just my cross to bear?
You used to be the only one,
But I guess you never really cared.
I continue to tear out my heart,
And throw it, piece by piece, to the flames.
I gave you everything, but now?
I see I was just a piece in your game.
I look between licks of orange,
And in the flames, see my heart,
It's unrecognizable, not of a lover,
Black, surrounded by ash, broken, and charred.
This is what you've done to me,
This is what you forced me to do,
To give up all I am.
How did I ever love you?

Writing was important to both of us, so when we were done, I couldn't keep the writing.

Really enjoyed the word choices in the poem, especially "lick." <--when referring to the fire.
