I had never understood the fool.
Until I saw him
Walking barefoot in the city.
Pale and crippled
Smoking a cigarette.


The author's comments:
This poem is about a man I saw, in his twenties, walking barefoot in downtown San Antonio. He was in crutches and looked like he was addicted to drugs. I felt sorry for him, so I wrote his story down.
