In the heads of the soldiers

Sorrow for their friends and enemies
Of all straight killing:
America goes on.

Among the prisoners of war,
In the hands of the enemy
Brought from the dead of the battlefield--
Hard whips, torture and crying—
In all the soldiers heads and hearts
Among the shots fired and prisoners:

America,
America goes on,
Not even realizing what happened,
Spitting and cursing at our own men:
Americans, what cowards! But the war goes on.
