Red Rocking Chair
Creak, clank, back and forth
The kettle is whistling in the background
Distant and easily ignored by your ears
Creak, clank, back and forth
The pot waits at the counter; its waiting to hold tea
For a moment, at least, you manage to ignore the
crash of falling fine china,
Rocking away from the world.
Creak, clank, back and forth
A temporary escape
Just sitting there, doing nothing for once
Taking a break and watching time fly by
Creak, clank, back and forth
A hound dog rushes in, barking and baying
Yapping like the wind or as if Hell has gotten loose.
It probably has, and you didn't notice. Thank gosh.
Creak, clank, back and forth
Somewhat surreal is the feeling of knowing
Boundaries and similarities.
What is yours, what you mustn't touch
Somewhere out there the teapot is calling the kettle black
But you ignore all that nonsense
- creak, clank, back and forth
your crochet hooks zoom by -
in your red, rocking chair.
