You Almost Turned 17
August the 17th was your birthday
The day of your first breath,
The day when your eyes first opened to this world
Happiness was found after the anticipation of 9 months had ceased
16 years in this world, you were as bright as the sunlight burning at dusk
July the 17th wasn't really a special day
All was quiet and still
Everything seemed peaceful, finally.
Tyler, my boyfriend, called me that night and we talked for hours.
You used to call him "that boy", and asked about him the last time I saw you
I soon found out that during that phone call,
You took
Your
Last
Breath.
Upon waking up at 2:30 in the morning, I found distress and chaos.
"We've lost her, lost her. Lost. Her. Her? But n-no."
police lights reflected off of the water.
A dive team rushed to recover you,
but you were trapped underneath that mechanical beast.
I wanted to lay in a corner and wallow in my misery,
Never face the cruelness of this world again.
The funeral was a warm day, the wind still blew.
The birds still chirped, People still smiled and laughed.
Unaware of the tragedy that had just taken place
I wanted to yell:
"Has no one told you she's not breathing!?"
I signed your casket with words I never said.
As I stare down at the neatly arranged flowers on your grave,
A longing takes over the
Hole
Left
In
My
Heart.
August 17th came around again, one month after you left.
But it wasn't the same.
This year we celebrated
Your
Day
Without
You.
but as I stand here at your grave, I understand that life still goes on.
the days get better, and I've found my smile again,
along with a laugh I thought I had lost.
I learned that it's okay to smile again
These memories dance in my head, licking at the tears that now
Stream
From
My
Eyes
Onto a single crimson rose that I had laid on your headstone
looking up just a second to let the sun bathe my face
Understanding, now, that I'm still here to leave my legacy,
As you have
So
Beautifully
Left
Yours.
