Father Time
I will never forget how we stopped time.
The minutes turned into hours, and the hours to days,
leaving a cloud of spiteful haze in its wake.
I believed in all those things your parents never tell you about; if only for my own sake,
but that was reckless and irresponsible; I suppose I have never been much of a lady.
Your eyes were empty, but they met mine with an abandon I have never seen,
and I swear in that moment nothing could stop the slam of my heart against my ribcage.
Like an envelope filled with love letters never sent,
you took me in as if it was the last time our moments would collide.
You and I, and the hell we walked through; not close to over, but one more step.
Voices muffled, phones ceased to ring; blissfully unaware.
Thunderstorms around the world quit their crashing boom to listen,
and birds stopped mid-flight to gaze upon the rare occurrence that father time held still.
He was smiling, I'm sure.
He will never forget how we stopped time.
