For Our Kids
When our kids ask us how we got here what are we to say?
Will we tell them how you asked me out on the first of May?
Will we tell them that their mothers smile,
Took a vacation for a while,
When their father up and left,
Snatched her heart and made a theft.
Or are we to tell them that in the fall,
Their father came back and risked it all,
Saying his love would never go away,
That in her arms is where he wanted to lay.
Will we tell them how we challenged each other?
How he never met her mother,
How we traveled the world together,
Even through the rainy weather.
Or just tell them the part that matters?
That we love each other every day and that’s the way it is going to stay.
