They Brought Me a Flag
I will miss you as the sun peaks through the curtains and dances on the walls.
I will miss you when I awake to an empty bed.
I will miss you as I nurse a cup of coffee.
I will miss you when there’s no one to tell me goodbye.
I will miss you when the neighbor must help move the furniture.
I will miss you eating in the empty expanse that is our dining room.
I will miss you when she goes galloping to her first day of kindergarten.
I will miss you on her graduation day.
I will miss you in every way.
I will miss you when the wind whispers where it’s been.
I will miss you when the snow blankets the yard,
and I will watch it alone.
I will miss you when Memorial Day comes ‘round.
I will miss you as I watch our angel walk down the aisle in a white gown.
I will miss you as the rain comes crashing down.
I will always miss you.
The telephone shrills – they’ve found your body.
I will always miss you, but I have to let you go.
They’ve found your body,
You’re coming home.
