Flannel Shirt
Where are you
Why did you leave me
I hear your sweet voice
wherever I go
your soft humming
like the whispers of the wind
your smile
like the rays of sunset
shooting through the treetops
The stories you used to tell
how they painted images in my head
The smell of smoke and cinnamon on
your red flannel shirt
your sweet raspy voice
as you read stories to me by the fire
The way your stomach rumbled
whenever you laughed
how your sweet laughter filled my heart
how it haunts my soul
with me longing to see you
to hear your voice
or smell that old flannel shirt
what I would give to sit on your
lap by the fire
How I long to be held
in your bug strong arms again
To see your snowy gray hair
or your rosy red cheeks
How I long to hold your hand
as we walked through the forest
how you told me we would always
be together
Now I am older
and know it was a lie.
A lie to believe that you would never leave
because now you are gone
Gone like a flock of geese heading south
or the white snowflakes melting on
the wet mossy forest ground that I am
sitting on
waiting for you to come back
