Powerless
a shout
and people come running
a scream
and feet pound across the pavement
toward her
an outpouring of concern
but a tear
and the hugs are fleeting
a sigh
is met with shrugs
and, inevitably, the subject is changed
“we care!” they insist
“we want to help!”
but then they shift uncomfortably
finding themselves incompatible with the practice
of holding someone up for long
“she should have said something!”
“why didn’t she ask for help?”
“if we’d known, we would have . . .”
well?
would have what?
