Going Under
I sink like an unsuccessfully skipped stone
Down, down even farther
Frantically trying not to float back up
My mermaid hair brushes against my face
I look up at the sky
Squint at the rippling sun
Of the world I left behind
It seems I have entered a new land
Conversations above me
Sound warped, like another language
Just when I reach the sand my chest becomes tight
The buzzing of bees in my head gets louder
I try to find air
But my mask suctions onto my face instead
Air
I forget what it feels like to breathe
Am I going to die?
No, I have to return
My feet propel me off the smooth sand
And within seconds...
I can breathe again
