Infinite Mortality on a Rainy Day for Freshman
The bushels of silk-black crows caw-caw
to the overcast sky
yawning through a sleepy afternoon.
Cool aquatic crystals
sink
onto
the
shivering shoulders of
innocent students, tromping along,
crowded under colored shields:
spotted, striped or speckled, bundled
bunched behind cinched hooded sweaters,
digging their soles
into miniscule lakes
daring
tiny,
dangerous
rapids— scurrying
to some
dry dungeon—
awaiting rescue.
Playing the finite game of Survival.
