Alone Today, Together Tomorrow: An Earth Day Poem
He hears the lapping of the waves,
She hears the chirping of crickets from afar,
And I, I hear nothing, but the wind whistling in my ears;
Leaving me chilled to the bone.
Everywhere I turn, I’m alone;
Perpetually and unceasingly alone.
There are billions of people on this earth,
But why is it that right now you all seem the same?
There must be someone, somewhere feeling as I do.
But where are you?
Do you really exist?
Or are you just a figment of my imagination, something just in my head alone?
I look around and what do I see?
Poverty-stricken children with sallow faces and pleading eyes,
Wars raging over religion and race,
Helpless animals being hunted for what, some sick kind of game?
But why can’t we ever learn, ever understand, that deep down inside we’re all the same.
There’s no difference between the boy by the sea, the girl in the grass, or for any matter you and me.
We share this earth together as beings.
Not just human beings, plants, animals, and humans alike
We have one world, one home;
Let’s not destroy it.
Instead, let us work together as one, to solve the problems of today
So that we can guarantee that he and she, and you and me, shall never be alone tomorrow.
Never, ever alone, but always together;
Always as one;
One united, strong, and cohesive universe.
And with that promise we shall make this earth the best place it can be
For all of us
Yes, even you and me.
