Cover Up
I’ve known her for so long
You think I would have known
But she kept it her own secret
She was all alone
She covers up with makeup
A smile swipes it clean
Some jewelry on her wrists- you’d never think a thing
A few trips to the bathroom
After every meal
Her eyes were once bright blue
Now a stubborn shade of teal
The carvings in her wrist
Will perhaps never go away
Her voice says they’re not deep
But her eyes retrace the days
Those days she tells me now
She cried all night long
I told her she could call me
But she knew that all along
And still now she bears the markings
Hoping no one sees
But she covers up with makeup
And a smile swipes it clean
