Dakota's Loss
Streams of light painted the night
with horizontal lines of color;
they bursted so bright and put up a fight
as they tried to outshine each other.
The skyline stood so still
as electricity’s smoke began to fill
and pour around the lack of stars.
We did not have to walk far
because it was cold, and even though I told
you, you already knew
because I only had holes
covering my skin.
By the time we were in,
the music was already loud
and there was a swarming crowd
of bodies. You stood next to me
and smiled as I filed that moment in
my memories. Our skeletons swayed
from side to side, and I started to confide
in you, even though you decided to hide
for so long.
Everything was right and nothing was wrong.
I felt you from my head to my toes
and by the time we were leaving my hands
grazed over a rose.
The petals were soft but I was pricked by a thorn
and then I realized how life has worn
you down from who you used to be.
Even if you can’t see,
My Dakota you will forever be.
