Noonie

While my hair curled just beneath my ears
You had hardly any at all.
You tickled my toes and cradled me with
Warm hands.
I played with dolls with triangle eyes and button noses,
And you flipped through a wrinkly newspaper.
You smiled peacefully as you rested in bed,
But not even Superglue could hold that smile for so long.
Your pearly whites were no longer visible,
Only two lips pressed together by force.
I toyed with your wig that sat on the table,
And you took photographs.
The only laugh you had all day.
The sun kissed my cheeks
But you only got paler.
And weaker.
We snuggled under the covers
And whispered about our dreams.
But Momma carried me to the crib
Once the clock reached six.
I didn’t even get to say goodnight.

When I was still young, my grandmother, Noonie, passed away. This unfortunate point in my life inspired me to write this poem.

My grandaughter wrote with such depth of feeling for a teenager, it brought tears to my eyes.  I'm very proud of her.
