The Opening
Darkness of eve disguised our bodies
As we scatter to our hideout
Quickly we dashed
Behind a neighbor’s yard
When we thought the coast was clear
Muddy animal prints etched into the ground
Mossy logs around like pieces of shrapnel
It was a short patch of woods
Tire swings hung from trees
Small puddles of water
This was the passage way
Hay like ground on the other side
Long canals of water created rows of ground
The view of the ocean
The sunset was a painted watercolor picture
Cat tails in the mossy part
We were the only ones there
Trees created walls
But the openness was abundant
Alligators were the only animals in sight
Guarding the canals like dogs
There were few hills but we savored every last one
Views of the water swallowed us whole
Smells of wildlife enveloped us
We all loved this place.
They called the opening.
