I sit at the barred window,
staring out as the sky slowly turns dark.
Another day has passed,
and still my prince has not come.
Where is he?

Ever since I was little,
I have heard miraculous tales of beautiful princesses locked in a tower,
saved from danger by handsome princes.
Why does the prince always marry the princess?
(Why can’t he marry a peasant once in a while?)

I know that I am not your average princess (I am hardly in any danger),
but I always thought my prince would come for me.
Day in and day out,
I keep silent vigil at the window,
watching for the majestic black horse that will carry my love to me.

But I see nothing except for a few plants blowing in the wind.
The storybooks tell me he should be here by now.
But I have never seen him.

Damn these storybooks!
They have taught me to sit and wait for a prince that doesn’t exist;
they have told me that life is easy
and I can get anything I want if I wait for it.

Well, I’m not gonna wait anymore.
Sometimes you have to make your own fairytales.
