Where I'm From
I’m from children’s books
From Mr. Yuk and family Sundays
I’m from blood curdling screams when the packers play
I am from dandelions created into bouquets for my parents
From dinners with my dads college “brothers”
And movie nights we are all to tired to attend
I’m from “you live and you learn” and “I swear you’re followed by a black cloud”
From family car rides to Alabama, Florida, and up north
I’m from watching the lighting paint the sky with my dad
From “shoot we missed church again” but we make a special appearance Christmas ever
I’m from a mom who graduated from Madison but now works as a taxi driver for her kids
From brides for good grades
And mom and dad forgiving me for violently using a cone to rip the mirror off the car
I’m from pearls hidden in birthday gifts from my godmother
From saying “I love you” every time you leave the house
And always getting tucked in before bed
I am from defying my parents to be my own person
But always finding away to make them proud
