A Poet
I was born with pupils as black as my skin;
They were a little lighter then.
I grew up in the heart of Jamaica;
Kings stunned by the girls that walk down the street.
Then it happened to me, the day I dread most.
The day he stole my innocence, my smile, my mind.
Forever not known as a father but a bother.
Growing up in the eyes of my mother;
Although she never knew.
She never knew she would give birth to me.
Mother you gave birth to a poet.
Mother you gave birth to a poet.
Mother you gave birth to a poet.
Father you have no say to put forth.
It kills me, kills me to hear you speak lies
Which is why when I try to speak; I let my feet speak for me.
16 years of walking through life feeling naked.
16 years of walking through life feeling naked.
But I walk now feeling pride because
Mother you gave birth to a poet.
