It Is Springtime
It is springtime in my mind when the sun rises
It is springtime in my mind when it rises
For the long winter of night is over
And thoughts of you descend with the moon
All of my children call the birds by name
They stopped, however, when you told them to
For you raised a hand and beckoned the night
And put it on my shoulder in the dark
You made such a clamor
When the elk were roaming the pasture
They had no guns strapped to their shoulders
They left only hoof prints in the snow
But I tell you, when you laughed
We would sail towards the sunset
And hope to beat the darkness
In that bittersweet race for joy
I lost the race that summer
And slipped into the darkness
But I stay there no longer
You cannot keep me there
I have no gun strapped to my shoulder
And I leave only footprints in the grass
