This one thing -- Driver's Test

There’s that one thing in everyone’s life
that you KNOW you can do,
you KNOW you can accomplish,
but it always seems like
there’s something in your way.

An obstacle,

a roadblock

always preventing you

from achieving

this one task,

this one event,

this one thing.

And this road block,

you didn’t put it there

it’s not your fault,

and there’s nothing you can do

to move it or speed up the process.

But continuously,

it’s there,

always haunting you

And you KNOW

that if it would only go away,

if you could move it yourself,

you could achieve

this one task,

this one event,

this one thing,

that you so desperately need and want.

And then, finally you have the chance
the roadblocks have disappeared,
you’re ready,
you’re confident,
and you KNOW you can do it.

The pressure is on, this is it.

this is your opportunity to complete

this one task,

this one event,

this one thing

that you’ve worked so hard for

and want so badly.

And then,
its ripped away from you,
just like that

They tell you “You CAN’T”

but you KNOW you CAN

as does everyone who’s close to you.

But THEY tell you 'You CANT'.

they become yet another roadblock

As if they know any better

than you (yourself!), what you’re capable of.

And so you’ve failed.
you’ve failed this one task,
this one event,
this one thing
that you’ve longed so much for
and wanted so badly
and worked so hard for.
You failed.

Now what?

Do I try again, and soon

before I forget how much this means to me?

how important this is?

Or do I wait awhile,

and practice, practice, practice

work, work, work

until its absolutely and totally perfect,

as flawless as it could possibly be?

The one thing I do KNOW

is that I WON’T give up,

I CAN’T give up,

that’s simply not an option.

I've only got three tries to get this right,
and with one strike already,
I guess I’d better practice, practice, practice
work, work, work
until its absolutely and totally perfect
as flawless as it possibly could be.

Because I CAN’T lose,
and I WON’T give up,
and I WILL succeed,
Because I KNOW I can.

The author's comments:
I wrote this poem withing 15 minutes of arriving home from the driver's branch after failing my first driving test. (After I had jumped through hoops to get my permit and then schedule the actual test.) I was crushed that I didn't pass and went to the computer while balling my eyes out to attempt poetry, because so many of my friends used it to get through hard times. It turned out 100 times better than I thought it would, and than any other poetry I've ever written. I am most definitely not the best poet in the world, but I'm quite proud of myself actually. =D
