Last Thoughts
Everyone wants to know about people's last words
Not me though
I want to know last thoughts
I think it would be intriguing to know
Or to even just think about
When people die do they know that they're about to?
Do they have even an inkling of what happens next?
Do they have a sudden rush of regret?
Of resentment?
Of happiness?
Of peace?
Do they suddenly want to celebrate their life?
When people know when they die before they do
Do they grieve themselves?
Or do they grieve the world?
Do they regret all of the things they should have done?
Or do they regret all that they should not have done?
Do they grieve themselves?
Do they not believe it at first?
Do they think that the universe is playing tricks on them?
Or are they just in shock, not knowing how to proceed?
Or does the seriousness set in?
Does everything lose its humor?
The laughter being sucked out of the world all at once?
Or do they want revenge?
Revenge on the world
On the people around them
On their own past
On the future that they will now never have
Or on the different endings they could have had for their stories
Even though no one can ever truly know
When they are set to die
When their internal clock stops ticking
When their final grain of sand falls
We can't help ourselves
People contemplate their mortality endlessly
In all different ways
Dark thoughts
Hyperfixations
Obsessions
Or my personal favorite: questions
Questions like:
What does it feel like?
What happens after we die?
Should we mourn our birthdays instead of celebrating them?
All of these run through peoples' brains
For most people they try to answer these with religion
Having different answers based in who's being asked
But, truth is
No one truly knows until the darkness truly sets in
