My body was born with pain

Woven through its veins

Like my sisters

We are suffering and wrath

Enclosed in a beautiful sheath

Throughout my life

My fury has grown unassailable

Its roots too deep to be conquered

Stripped of my serenity

Burdened by my plentiful scars

Hardship is my companion and my tormentor

A reminder

May I turn men to stone

Then I will never again close my eyes in fear

I will use my suffering as a shield

For my body and my sisters

Inspired by one of the many tellings of the story of Medusa, this poem reflects on the pain women experience throughout their lives.
