this house is not a home
This house is not a home
Even as I press my back to the off-white-yellow bathroom tiles and hear
Children squealing as they play in the puddles the rain left behind
Their laughter bright and clear
This house is not a home
And the lady next door would agree
Picket fence half-painted white
And a half-ajar tree
She’s always got half of her, one foot and one arm, out the door
Always ready to go
But something in face says
“I’ll never truly leave.”
This house is not a home
And here,
I tell you why.
