From the Songbird
Hide in the small bushes and trees, where shadows hide your form.
Watch the world buzz in the spring haze as you sit and contemplate.
If you are found, take flight.
Sweep low to the ground, where bugs and seeds are plentiful and unguarded.
Sing your despairs and your joys and hear it called music.
Serenade your loved one.
Build your nest from whatever you can find, line it with feathers, and fill it with life.
When the eagles and snakes come, screech and defend what is precious.
Do not despair when you must leave; it’s best to spread your wings and find a new place to build your nest.
Fly when you need to stretch your wings, for who knows when you won’t be able to for a while.
Nest in cities and nest in farms.
Relish the storm, when worms leave their burrows and food is plentiful.

I wrote this in late 2020, during the first semester of my sophomore year. I ended up making several revisions to it over the course of the year, and it ended up in the school magazine at the end of the year. It's my favorite poem, that I've written, at least, to date.
