Nothing but Flesh
I am nothing but flesh stretching over bone,
Nothing but bone wrapped with muscle,
Muscle with veins,
Translucent veins that I can see if I look hard enough.
I am nothing but veins,
Veins filled with blood,
Blood that journeys throughout the marrow of my bones,
Blood that finds its way to my limbs so they can freeze at any loud sound,
Blood that can find its way to my head to fill me with venomous thoughts.
I am nothing but thoughts,
Thoughts that trigger nightmares,
Thoughts that taint my blood,
Thoughts that are constantly fabricating,
Thoughts that become tangible whenever I turn my back.
Thoughts that get my heart racing, pushing against my chest in hopes of an escape.
I am nothing but a heart,
Pulsing, thumping, bleeding.
Nothing but a mangled-looking thing given false beauty, false hope, false praise that I don’t deserve,
That I’ve never deserved,
But it would be rude to say No,
So I say thank you,
So I lie.
I am nothing but a liar,
I am nothing but a fraud,
I am nothing but a weaver of dreams and wistful thinking,
I am nothing,
I am nothing,
I am nothing.
