Oh cactus, great solitary sentinel

Your spiky skin and inimical thorns a wonder

An awe bewildering all that breathes

Beneath barbs both bold and belligerent

Is your core a tender heart?

Is your coat the hostile part?

What sweetness do you protect?

What do your quills reflect?

The author's comments:

This work compares a cactus to a human with a metaphor, since someone can be one way on the outside and another way on the inside.
