Four blue speckled eggs

sit surrounded by lush green leaves

as they huddle together in the bush

next to my grandfather’s house.

They keep one another warm as it drizzles.

The water beads off of them

and splashes off,

like gentle tapping on a piano.

Ting. Ting. Ting.

Plop!

Two of the eggs have now hatched.

Their bodies naked and transparent

like coffee filter paper.

Their eyes still closed

to the world outside the bush.

The mother gallantly protects her babies,

standing guard everyday

and night without fail.

She eyes us with caution.
