Hot Vanilla Latte
Someone asked what I would do if I ran into you.
They told me it’s life and it’s bound to happen.
The world is too small to have it to yourself.
Maybe I would find myself in a coffee shop.
Maybe you would walk in right after the sun goes down.
Maybe I wouldn’t notice you because I’m so deep in my journal.
Maybe you would look at me and take a deep breath and a leap of courage.
Maybe you would walk to my table and ask if this seat was taken.
Maybe I would let you sit.
Maybe I would do a shuffle to put my journal up.
Maybe it had pages written about you.
Maybe we would catch up and laugh, just like grownups do.
Maybe you would talk about the other girls you’ve encountered
Maybe you would tell me how they just weren’t home because it wasn’t me.
Maybe I would laugh and put my hair behind my ear because it makes you blush.
Maybe you would ask about my parents and I would answer in disgust.
Maybe you would ask how my writing was going and I would probably blush.
Maybe you would ask me if I was seeing anyone
Maybe I would search the pain in your eyes before answering no
Maybe you would let out a sigh of relief
Maybe you would laugh at me drinking cold coffee like you always use to do.
Maybe you would order the same thing you always do.
Maybe when the lights in the shop close down you make your way to my car
Maybe you tell me we should do it all over again
And maybe before you went away you would tell me how you were sorry and you were stupid for letting me go.
But that is, I never put much thought into it.
