Addiction
Sports
Soccer, football, basketball, baseball,
Softball, swimming, lacrosse, track.
They all have one thing in common,
One thing you might not expect.
Not all of them need a ball,
Or a starting 11, or 5,
Not all require cleats or the same shoes.
Competitive sports are an addiction.
They’re drugs.
No matter what you do you can’t walk away from it,
No matter how many tears you cry,
No matter how many times you’re told you’re not good enough.
You still stay.
No matter the sweat or blood,
No matter how many bruises and broken bones you may have,
No matter how much you want to quit,
You stay.
Like an addiction, you can’t break.
Either you break it,
Or it breaks you.
I'm a competitive soccer player myself, as someone who has faced all the ups and downs of sports I wanted to put the struggle in a poem. I wanted to write something others can relate to; so they know they are not the only ones with an internal battle.
