The creek at the end of the lane is where I always preferred to spend a summer day,

It’s small and sunny, filled with singing wildlife like bees, birds, and a bunny,

The way the light filtered through the towering trees, the way it smelled of a perfect summer breeze,

The creek was a sight to behold, with its vibrant wildflowers and colorful mold,

I would play in the stream, muddy and happy as can be,

But then school would come around, and the stream would dry up, revealing the ground,

I grew up in the creek, and I am terribly sad to leave,

But I know the magical habitat will grant more children a wonderful time,

I promise you that.

Although the creek still exists today, Claire still longs for the days she would spend splashing in its shallow waters. This is a rewrite of a poem high school senior Claire wrote way back in fifth grade, and one of her mother's personal favorites.
