Birdcage

The little birds in the cages beat

In their beaks, a melody, not sweet

In their hearts a longing to be free

Their wings clipped to stay within me

The little birds flutter, my rabid fears

Fighting each to conjure my tears

I cry out, powerless to release

The sharp-beaked birds that steal my peace

But with a breath and a rising sun

I’m reminded that the race is run

If a footfall lands me last

I’ll know the time for us has passed

I walk the path formed by sure hands

I know I’ll arrive at the perfect lands

Release the clasps, let the fears take wing

I whisper, I speak, I shout, I sing

Open the cage, let the birds fly away

This is the dawn of a new day

@SparrowSun thank you! I loved reading the matched trilogy a few years back, and this is a really sweet thing to say!
