&ldquo; In three words I can sum up everything I&#039;ve learned about life: it goes on.&rdquo; <br /> ― Robert Frost

I am told to share my heart

And to guard it too.

How do I share my heart, then?

Or do I just share my armor?

The bridges we burn leave ash on our hands,

We blink past eyes full of smoke, searching,

Do these bridges bring enemies?

Or are we too afraid of something good?

If you dance on mountains of ashes,

You are safe. Or more alone.

That’s rain on your face and your eyelashes,

Rain tainted with traces of ash.

We will walk home smelling of smoke

And telling ourselves that we did it.

We conquered all of our demons first,

Killing a few angels in the process.

So, fashion your fear into a blade.

Forge your loneliness into a shield,

And build your walls with all your might,

So nothing good comes at night.

We can be safe if you listen to me.

Lock up your happiness and regrets.

Store them under you shame and pain,

Then, throw away the key.

Remember, memories should be burned first.

Those little pictures and letters in your mind

Will be better off as piles of dust,

Somewhere where they can’t find you.

When someone sets your world on fire,

And the flames only seem to grow higher,

Remember, they are protecting their heart

Know that you would do the same.

Warning.

Fire

Spreads

Fire

Burns

Fire

Saves

Fire

Hurts.

The author's comments:

I feel like a lot of us who have experienced pain and too afraid to reopen our hearts to new people. We end up locking the good out while trying to protect ourselves.
