Our Hearts
We could have never prepared for that morning
It had seemed like a normal day
Yet within three short minutes
Our whole world began to shake
"He is dead," they told us
Disbelief filling the air
Tears began welling in our eyes
Our heads bowed down in prayer
No one could have known
You would be ripped from the Earth one night
No one could understand
How we were supposed to fight
You were just a kid
A kid forever you shall remain
Your whole life laid ahead
Your death was not in vain
Your memory must live on
Through those who you have saved
You will never be forgotten
For in our hearts you will stay
We miss you more than you know
Now our whole life has changed
But you have brought us closer together
In our hearts for the rest of our days

Two months ago I lost one of my closest friends to a house fire. He, along with his sister and father, was burned alive in their own home. April 5 would have been his 15 birthday. In honor of him and his family, I wrote this poem.
