One Step Away From the Ledge

I know what this may look like

Like I jumped right off the edge

Even though the trick was trite

My feet still left the ledge

There is nothing I can beg

No where I can tredge

For here now lay the dead

Whose feet were just a step from the ledge

I wish I could have seen

The awful look of dread

That turned my face to green

When I look straight down from the ledge

I didn’t mean to cross the line

I didn’t mean what I’d said

I just wish I had more time

Before I left the ledge

We all must leave it sometime

From life till death we pledge

Though death can be sublime

We all must leave the ledge

The old and the young

All but the bones of the dead

To the edge they all have clung

We all let go of the ledge

Some are shoved from their heights

Others lose their balance or their head

Some throw themselves to their own plights

But most just fall from their ledge

Not until we fall

And have left our protective hedge

Do we hear the call

“Please don’t leave the ledge.”

It is now very late

But I am not going to bed

It is everybody’s fate

To be one step too far from the ledge

Now there is nothing but a smile

There is no more to dread

We will be gone for a while

But you too will leave the ledge.
