My love does not lie in mundane things
My love does not lie in mundane things:
it does not lay with silver and gold
or with the power possessed by kings
nor in a romance with a clasping iron hold.
My respect is not given freely –
it is seldom earned
but when it is given it is given deeply
and though it is given it is not yearned.
I love what I respect,
I respect what I love
and my love is for the sea.
And like the sea my love is untamed –
it is as ferocious and daring as she.
My love is as uncontrolled as she is old
and her power, like her beauty,
holds fatal secrets untold.
Yet she isn’t all dangerous and deadly –
her tranquility is equally seductive.
Her calm sapphire waters and diamond shimmering surface
shows she is as wondrous as she is destructive.
Let me confess my love to thee!
And though you cannot return that love for me –
I will always revere the sea,
forever knowing that my heart
will eternally belong to thee.
