Understanding Eyes
Her eyes were prettiest late at night
they were full of sadness
and wet eyelashes
when cups of cold coffee in the ER numbed her fingers,
and she read aloud
for anyone who would listen
and she would smile
turning up her lips
but those eyes
they stayed the same
she saw the world
filterless.
she made new friends
because she didn't try
you can’t comfort someone in the ER
but she did
it was because of those eyes
they didn't hide
they were fearful
and sad
and wet
goodbyes are hard
but talk to her eyes
they understand
even if she doesn't
