Staircase
The rain hit the windows with a light tapping sound.
The lights dimmed as the lightning struck.
My daughter and I faced each other.
Tears cascaded down her beautiful face,
Forming a pool of grief and despair at her feet.
Her eyes screamed in pain,
Screamed in a foreign language.
Her hands were thrashing around,
Her mouth was on fire.
And I sat there,
And I listened.
And I heard.
And I didn't understand.
My daughter,
My daughter, the one who has it all,
The grades.
The friends.
The family.
What more could I give her?
A tutor?
A pet?
I held the power,
Yet she controlled every blind movement I made.
Her skin was scarred with pain.
A pain I could not see,
A pain that was covered with designer labels.
My daughter looked at me,
Wanting me too see the darkness that filled her life,
But how could I see something that was not there?
As she stormed out,
Leaving sobs and stomps of confusion in my ears,
The rain hit the windows with a light tapping sound.
The lights dimmed as the lightning struck.
