i wonder if they were old friends
one maybe just passing through
but as i watched her watch him
walk away to his fancy job
decked in his classy suit and
his favorite football team tie
(and her with the edgy soul
of the inner artist)
i knew she would stand there
in the stinging icy rain that
momma and i dashed through
the groceries all haphazard in the back
i knew that she would wtach him leave
each footstep sprung a dream
that would never be
