"I knew who I was this morning, But I've changed a few times since then" ~Alice in Wonderland

I can see what others cannot

Hear what escapes from heavens’ ears
I have always done this without a thought
Thoughtless, mindless, for years and years
I’d never given much thought to the end

I only hoped it would come quick, sparing tears.

Their voices, so loud, echo in my head.
I can never tell if they’re demons from below, or angles from above
When I scream they torment me, at night in my bed
They’ll show me no mercy, no love

Why must they drive me to the point of bleeding fists on doors?
They push me closer, closer to madness. Push comes to shove.

Can’t they leave me alone?
Don’t they see the damage is done?
Do they not hear my cries, my screams or when I moan?
Do they not know they have already won?

Just take my sanity and leave me!
Let me see the light of the rising sun!

“You shall never be free,”
“We will keep you here.”

The voices scream at me.
I never hear them very clear
But in fragments that piece themselves together
But I think I’d become lonely if they were to just disappear

I’d have not sunken into the madness!

Why does everyone just assume so?
Why has everyone left me to deal with my sadness?
They have just left my demons and I to grow
What do they expect me to do besides make friends?
They did not tell me to extinguish the embers that were left aglow.

Nobody believes me when I say my voices mean no harm.
They just stare at me with eyes wide open.
Talking in soft voices to cause no alarm
“Oh dear, your mind is just so broken!”
I am not mad! I never have submerged to that.

They just rip up wounds, never meant to be reopened.

I had to write an Edgar Allan Poe themed poem for English class. I fell so in love with this poem as I was drafting it. It follows an ABABCB rhyme pattern.
