I Hear the Drum Rolls Beating

I hear the drum rolls beating
And of men marching
I am a soldier of the past
My brothers being carried
I hear the lord calling down below

I understand the beating boots
My heart lifts into the sky
I hear the bang of seven saluting shots
And the cries of comrades gone
I lay my hand upon the casket

I feel my heart hit the sky

but be handed back to me
I hear the drum rolls of my lord

calling down to me
I understand the light given by those

who fought and died for me
I see greatness in their deeds
I feel their boots hit the ground
once again in heaven.

I am a seventeen year old who has been writting a book since the age of fifteen. I enjoy writing as it allows my imagination to travel to places that the human body can not always go. It allows me to freely express my thoughts an imagination. In the poem I Hear the Drum Rolls Beating I was inspired by my teacher to write a poem for an assignment in the format of author Whitman. Our Soldier's of our Country, who serve 24 hours a day, seven days a week, make our great nation what it is today. Sometimes the gratitude they deserve goes unoticed as our daily lives overtake us. Please pay tribute to all soldier's when you see them thank them, as many of their comrades have fought and died for our freedom.
