That Saturday
I remember that Saturday-
the day the Earth stood still.
The words we wrote,
the words we spoke,
Garbled, like a stadium’s trill.
I remember that Saturday-
the day that started small.
We woke, we talked,
We laughed, we walked,
mute to the Siren’s screeching call.
I remember that Saturday-
the day something felt amiss.
As if at any second,
The darkness beckoned,
But its victim, I dismissed.
I remember that Saturday-
the day we grew in years.
The lonely hallways
the empty doorways
Whispers silent to his ears.
I remember that Saturday-
the day the questions started.
If we had known-
If he had shown-
Rumors of the mystery man that parted.
I remember that Saturday-
the day we lost a friend.
He tried hard to handle
life’s slow-burning candle
But extinguished its light, in the end.
I remember that Saturday-
the day that he was found.
The day we pondered
The day we wondered
Just what brought him to the ground.
I remember that Saturday-
the day everyone woke up.
Their minds were clear,
washed clean with tears,
their actions, they owned up.
I remember that Sunday-
the day we stood and stared.
We detested, we hated
The monster created
By our selfish wants, needs, and cares.
I remember that fateful day
When we all blended into one.
When there were no factors
that went into the matter
simply the stars and the time and the sun.
That day when we all realized who
and when we realized why
as each and every day goes past
more and more of us cast a blind eye.
We are the destructive ones
We demolish what we can’t see
We judge, bite, claw
and through it all
Ignore the victim’s plea.
God gave us just one tiny chance-
to prove life’s troubles, we could beat.
That we could grow, and reach the skies
But it was too large a feat.
So we must learn from our mistakes
Before it is too late
Or we may all go just like he did-
subjected to a terrible fate.
I remember that Monday morning-
a soothing blue adorned the sky,
and the promise of a brand new life
Without pain, and hate, and strife
Gave us hope, and gave us heart
to start a new beginning, a new start.
And as a community, we will not shy
And our memories of him shall never die. ?
