My Best Friend's Secret
A whisper I hear that cuts like a knife
A secret you share that scares me all right
“I’m done; I’m through with this life
I don’t want to stay a single more night!”
I gasp and I look at you with tears in my eyes
I never imagined you needed an escape from here
I silently pray that your words are just lies
Hoping for the best, I ask my biggest fear
“I don’t understand at all my friend,
Explain to me please what you mean to say!”
In response you sigh, “My life, my friend, I wish it to end.
I cannot bear another dreadful day!”
You cannot mean this; it cannot be true!
Don’t you understand all that you mean to me?
All of the wonderful happy memories we've been through?
All of the future ones that haven’t yet to be?
The only word that escapes my lips I ask, “Why?”
“I hate it here, I hate what I can’t find anywhere!”
What can be said when your friend just wants to die?
Without a word I do the only thing I can possibly dare:
I wrap my arms tight around your middle
And though you struggle, I refuse to let you go.
To imagine that you think your life matters so little
I hold you closer and whisper in your ear as my tears begin to flow
“You are my best friend and I love you,
I couldn't now, not ever, live without you by my side.
When I am lost and don’t know what to do, it is you I turn to.
Tell me my dearest friend, how could I live if you died?”
Your legs give way as you begin to understand
To me you mean more than the whole entire universe
Telling you to keep your life with me is more of a demand
A world without you couldn't get any worse.
That’s the day I saved my best friend’s life
And six years later I stand watching her father walk her down the isle
Where the preacher introduces my best friend to the world as my wife
And we plan to stay alive together for much more than a just little while
